Motorcycle Parts - OEM Or Aftermarket?

This is always a difficult one to answer when shopping for motorcycle parts and I firmly believe that each one of us must decide what's best for our bikes AFTER carefully evaluating each of the possibilities.

For me?

Well... it really depends on what I am looking for - just replacement or improvement - , the availability of the part, my budget and other things. Sometimes I buy OEM, others aftermarket motorcycle parts.

Keep reading. You will find some views that will hopefully help you decide the next time you shop for motorcycle parts.

What a heck are OEM parts?

OEM parts stands for Original Equipment Manufacturer parts which not necessarily mean the OM (Original Manufacturer) actually produced them. You know, many motorcycle and automobile manufacturers don't manufacture each of the parts used in their vehicles. They frequently have the parts designed and manufactured by outside independent companies and then, install them in their machines or put them in their own boxes to be sold as OEM parts!

Good to know when buying OEM Motorcycle Parts:

When you buy OEM Motorcycle Parts you are buying the exact same original part the manufacturer used to build your motorcycle, that means:

>> Same performance as the part installed in your motorcycle right now. The part won't be better nor worse than the original part you want to replace.

>> Normally OEM parts a more (in some cases MUCH more) expensive than aftermarket parts.

>> Motorcycle and car agencies clerks will normally tell you OEM Parts are higher quality and the best option for replacements. Is this true? Well sometimes it is, sometimes it's not.

>> Normally after a certain period of time, the manufacturer will allow the company that originally designed/produced the part to sell it in their own box at a considerably lower cost, making it: an Aftermarket OEM part! :-)

>> BE CAREFUL if your bike is still in its guarantee period make sure you use only OEM parts and have them installed by authorized mechanics. If you don't do so, you will probably void the guarantee.

What about Aftermarket parts?

Aftermarket parts should perform as well as OEM parts but are produced by companies other than the original manufacturer(s).

Things to know when buying Aftermarket Motorcycle Parts:

>> MAKE SURE YOUR GUARANTEE PERIOD IS OVER. In many cases, you can VOID your guarantee if you have an aftermarket part installed by an unauthorized mechanic in your machine. I know I said it before, but it's worth repeating; I happened to me! :-(

>> Equivalent aftermarket Suzuki motorcycle parts are normally cheaper than OEM parts. Sometimes up to 70% cheaper!

>> Aftermarket parts can have lower, the same or higher quality than the original.

>> When buying aftermarket parts make sure you are getting AT LEAST the same quality as the OEM part. If possible try to get some reviews about brands and performance. You can do it in the Internet, with your favorite mechanic or with fellow riders.

>> If you are looking for high performance parts and devices, you know the kind: carbon fiber, titanium, aerospace aluminum parts and gizmos, well you will probably find them as aftermarket motorcycle parts.

OEM or aftermarket motorcycle parts, sooner or later you will be shopping for them...

Enjoy the ride!

Bathroom Remodeling Can Be Kept Simple and Cheap

What do you want from your bathroom?

Do you want it to be more than clinically cold and merely functional? The trend today is towards making bathrooms a warm, friendly place to be, a place where you don't mind spending a fair amount of time in. Lets face it, we all have to use the bathroom sooner or later and it's probably the most used room in the house.

If you are planning to remodel your bathroom you should try to provide an experience for the users of the room and that includes yourself. Try to think beyond the simple utility of being a place to wash in.

How ambitious is your bathroom-remodeling project?

When you remodel your bathroom a lot will depend on how much space you have available and how extensive you want your bathroom remodel to be. When I remodeled my bathroom it all started because I dropped something into the bathtub and cracked it. That meant that the bath had to be replaced but I could have stopped there instead of taking the opportunity to replace everything, rearrange the bathroom and add a shower cubicle. Oh yes and I spent a lot of money too.

You don't have to be that ambitious

As long as your bathroom fittings are in working order you don't need to replace them. There is a lot you can do by adding storage space to get things off the floor, replace some tiling that may have seen better days. Giving the place a simple coat of paint can work wonders also. Even if you do need to replace some items like I did then replacing it with a similar item in the same position can be a lot cheaper than a full blown remodel.

How about a few plants?

If you have the space in your bathroom you might like to add a few pot plants here and there. They can hide the more drab aspects of your bathroom and provide a point of interest for anyone using the room. Some people like to talk to plants but don't like others to know that they do so being alone in a bathroom with some nice plants can be very therapeutic.

Think about the lighting

Lighting can make a big difference and adding some nice warm, soothing light that makes you feel cosy and at home can enhance your experience of the bathroom in a very subtle and pleasant way.

Keep it clean and shiny

Often all a bathroom needs is a good clean. Polish the metal work in the room, the faucets and towel rails etc. Make sure that you remove all the lime scale that has built up over the years. Clean the tiles on the walls so that they gleam like new. Do all this and keep it all clean by going over it once a week. It can make your bathroom look as good as if you'd done a complete bathroom remodel. It's also quicker, a lot less stressful and will save you loads of money.

What to do if you're thinking of a more ambitious bathroom remodel

If you've got plenty of money, time and enthusiasm then you may want to do something a bit more radical than simply clean or paint your bathroom. The article Bathroom Remodeling Idea - How to get inspiration will give you some inspiration on how to get started on a more ambitious project.

Basement Waterproofing Advice - Hiring a Professional

When hiring a company for your waterproofing needs, there are many things to consider and to be wary of. While there are companies that are reputable and will not take advantage of a customer, there are those that may not be as honest as they should be.

Research

This is why the best basement waterproofing advice that one can heed is to research any companies before actually contacting them, or even after you contacted them. As a homeowner, your priorities should be to make certain that you are not taken advantage of and making sure that the company provides quality service that they stand behind. When researching waterproofing companies the best place to start is the community. You can also find loads of information about contracting companies online.

References

Talk to family, friends, and neighbors to see if they have had experiences with any of the local companies and would like to recommend any one company. These people can be trusted to give their honest opinion on their experience and whether any particular company, can provide basement waterproofing advice and possibly their service.

Telephone Book & Guarantees

If your friends or families are not able to provide a reference for any company, you can utilize your local telephone book. The Yellow pages ads usually list company guarantees, which are all important. There is nothing more important when considering a company then their guarantee. If a company does not offer a guarantee of their work, then they are not the company that is even worth considering hiring or even giving a chance to provide an estimate.

Reputable companies will not only give you honest basement waterproofing advice but will guarantee that if you choose them to perform the work that you can count on the fact that it will be done correctly. So after having established that the company is has a guarantee, what is the next step?

Cost Estimate

The estimate of what it will cost. The cost estimate of the waterproofing should be clear and concise and always list exactly what work needs to be done. It should never contain vague information that you, as the homeowner, cannot even decipher.

What work is listed should be explained thoroughly by the company representative and that representative should also take as much time as needed to make sure that you understand the estimate and exactly what you will be paying once the work is completed.

Alcoholism - Causes and Effects

Alcoholism is the inability to control or ignore a strong craving for alcohol. People suffering from alcoholism often find that they need the aid of alcohol to feel good or normal. They often crave alcohol, but this craving is much stronger than the occasional craving people have for certain foods. The craving for alcohol experienced by those suffering from alcoholism is often so severe that the individual feels they need alcohol as if it were food or water. They do not feel they can go a day, or in some extreme cases, an hour, without consuming alcohol.

Alcoholism is not characterized by the type of alcohol consumed or how much alcohol is needed to satisfy the craving. Alcoholism is characterized mostly by the loss of control. Alcoholics often build up a tolerance to alcohol over time. This means they need more and more alcohol to satisfy their need for it. As they consume more and more alcohol, serious health problems manifest themselves. Alcoholism also affects the sufferer psychologically, as well as physically.

Alcoholism differs from alcohol abuse in that a person who abuses alcohol does not display a loss of control over their drinking. An individual who abuses alcohol may act irresponsibly while under the influence. They may also put themselves and others in danger by driving or operating machinery while drinking. Relationships may suffer, as with alcoholism and work performance may become careless. While alcohol abuse differs from alcoholism, it can be a serious problem and should not be ignored.

There are many symptoms of alcoholism. Many of the symptoms of alcohol abuse are also displayed by those suffering from alcoholism. Some symptoms include drinking alone or secretly (hiding the fact that they are drinking), memory loss (also known as "blacking out"), ritually drinking at certain times during the day and becoming irritable when this ritual is disturbed, feeling the need to drink to feel normal, loss of interest in relationships or activities that were once enjoyed, experiencing financial, marital, or legal problems caused by drinking, building a tolerance to alcohol or experiencing withdrawal symptoms if alcohol is not available. These symptoms are just a few of the possible symptoms that could be displayed by alcoholics.

Studies show that some individuals are more likely to experience alcoholism at some point in their lives than others. For example, genetics can play a role in whether or not a person is likely to be drawn to alcohol. Often the children of alcoholics will have a higher risk of one day becoming an alcoholic themselves. Psychological problems also increase the risk for alcoholism. Individuals suffering from depression, attention deficit disorder, bipolar disorder and many other psychological disorders often turn to alcohol to make them feel better or ease their suffering. This often turns into a dependency.

There are many health problems that are caused by alcoholism. Alcoholism depresses the central nervous system. Over time, alcoholism can cause fatigue, paralysis of the muscles surrounding the eyes and short-term memory loss. Other, more life-threatening health problems caused by alcoholism include cirrhosis of the liver, high blood pressure, heart failure, stroke, gastrointestinal problems, neurological disorders, sexual dysfunction and bone loss. Alcoholism also increases the risk of certain cancers, such as cancer of the esophagus, larynx, liver and colon. If left untreated, alcoholism can lead to death.

Why You Need to Understand Your Readers Before You Start Writing

Knowing your document's intended reading audience before you begin writing will always help you write more effective documentation. There are three simple questions you should always ask before you start writing:

Who is your audience? What is the purpose of the document? What language and format is my reader expecting?

The answer to the first two questions will assist you in answering the third question, which really is the heart of your document - its content, style and language.

Who is your audience?

The first step before you write is to determine the audience for whom you are writing. If you don't do this, your document has the potential to be misunderstood, criticised or even fail to convey your message. At worst, a wrong decision can be made based on the information you provided in your document and this can negatively impact you.

So determining your audience is something you need to do first. For example, are you writing for job recruiters, your boss, a client, a technology expert, the Chief Executive, or the floor manager? Knowing this information helps you determine the content and form of your document.

What is the purpose of the document?

Also ask yourself a simple question before you start writing: Why are you writing the document? You need this "purpose" to determine what content you include. It could be a simple sentence to remind you of the question you are trying to answer with your writing. Keeping this answer on a note beside your document can be a useful reference in the cases where you get a "mental block" or can't decide whether particular content should really be included.

For example, there is no point in explaining the definition of a technical topic if your audience are domain experts with detailed knowledge of the subject matter. However, if you are reaching out to the Chief Executive that doesn't have any background on the topic, you may need to include some information on it.

What language and format is your reader expecting?

Being armed with the answers to the above two questions will help you deal with the third issue, and that is to understand what sort of language your audience normally uses. This way you can appropriately pitch the tone and style of your writing. However, if you are in doubt, using simple English is best. Try and put yourself in their shoes and re-read what you have written. Will they understand the language or terminology?   If not, you may need to re-word or explain the words, meanings and abbreviations in more detail.

The audience you are writing for may also dictate what style of document you need to write - either its layout or format. This could be a job application, memo, report or general correspondence. Make sure you obtain this information before you start, as formatting your document to this style does take time, and you don't want to have to rewrite it.

These are three simple steps in helping you kick off your document writing. If you have the answers to them before you begin your writing, it can help you to be more effective and efficient with your writing efforts.
